Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
Erosion of the mucosal lining of the stomach or duodenum, often caused by H. pylori infection or NSAID use.
Symptoms
- Gnawing or burning epigastric pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Hematemesis or melena (if bleeding)
Nursing Interventions
- Monitor for signs of GI hemorrhage
- Administer proton pump inhibitors
- Encourage avoidance of alcohol and smoking
- Monitor for signs of perforation (rigid, board-like abdomen)
