Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
The formation of a blood clot within a deep vein, commonly in the legs, which carries a risk of pulmonary embolism.
Clinical Signs
- Unilateral calf pain and tenderness
- Warmth and redness of the affected area
- Swelling of the extremity
Nursing Management
- Elevate affected limb
- Do not massage the affected site
- Administer anticoagulants as ordered
- Monitor for signs of bleeding
- Encourage early ambulation post-prophylaxis
Prevention
- Use sequential compression devices
- Administer prophylactic heparin or enoxaparin
