Insulin Administration
Insulin is a hormone used to manage hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus, requiring precise administration and monitoring.
Types and Timing
- Rapid-acting (Lispro, Aspart): Administer within 15 minutes of meals.
- Short-acting (Regular): Only type for IV use; clear appearance.
- Intermediate (NPH): Cloudy appearance; mix by rolling.
- Long-acting (Glargine): No peak; do not mix with other insulins.
Nursing Considerations
- Rotate injection sites to prevent lipodystrophy.
- Monitor blood glucose levels before and at peak action times.
- Signs of hypoglycemia: diaphoresis, tremors, tachycardia, confusion.
- If hypoglycemic and conscious, provide 15g of fast-acting carbohydrates.
