Infection Control and PPE
Preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is a critical standard of safety for the newly licensed nurse.
Precautions
- Standard: Hand hygiene for all patients, wear gloves for bodily fluids.
- Contact: Gown and gloves; used for C. diff, MRSA, VRE.
- Droplet: Surgical mask; used for influenza, pertussis, meningococcal meningitis.
- Airborne: N95 respirator and negative pressure room; used for TB, varicella, measles.
PPE Order
- Donning: Gown, mask, goggles, gloves.
- Doffing: Gloves, goggles, gown, mask (or in reverse alphabetical order of weight).
