Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
The obstruction of pulmonary arteries, usually by a thrombus, which impedes gas exchange and perfusion.
Signs and Symptoms
- Sudden onset dyspnea and tachypnea
- Tachycardia and pleuritic chest pain
- Feeling of impending doom
- Hemoptysis and hypotension
Interventions
- Elevate head of bed to high-Fowler’s position
- Administer oxygen immediately
- Start anticoagulant therapy (e.g., heparin, enoxaparin)
- Monitor PTT for heparin or INR for warfarin therapy transition
