Liver Cirrhosis
Chronic, progressive disease of the liver characterized by diffuse fibrosis and formation of regenerative nodules.
Complications
- Portal hypertension leading to esophageal varices
- Ascites and peripheral edema
- Hepatic encephalopathy due to elevated ammonia
- Coagulopathy due to impaired clotting factor production
Management
- Administer lactulose for hepatic encephalopathy
- Monitor abdominal girth and daily weights
- Implement bleeding precautions (soft toothbrush, electric razor)
- Monitor mental status for signs of asterixis or confusion
