Positive and Negative Predictive Value

Predictive values determine the probability that a patient has the condition based on the result of a diagnostic test.
Definitions
- Positive Predictive Value (PPV): Probability of disease given a positive test result.
- Negative Predictive Value (NPV): Probability of no disease given a negative test result.
Clinical Context
- Predictive values are highly dependent on the prevalence of the disease in the population.
- PPV increases when disease prevalence is high.
- NPV increases when disease prevalence is low.
