Introduction to Biochemistry
Glycolysis Pathways

Glycolysis is the anaerobic metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate to generate ATP.
Key Metabolic Steps
- Occurs in the cytosol of the cell.
- Net yield: 2 ATP and 2 NADH per glucose molecule.
- Pyruvate is converted to Acetyl-CoA or lactate depending on oxygen availability.
Clinical Correlation
- Lactic acid buildup occurs during anaerobic metabolism (hypoxia/shock).
- Insulin promotes glucose uptake into cells to fuel glycolysis.
