Heat-Related Emergencies

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are progressive conditions requiring rapid cooling and fluid resuscitation.
Assessment Signs
- Heat exhaustion: Profuse sweating, pale/clammy skin, dizziness, syncope.
- Heat stroke: Core temp >104F (40C), altered mental status, hot/dry skin, tachycardia.
- Heat stroke is a medical emergency; risk of multi-organ failure.
Emergency Interventions
- Move patient to cool, shaded environment.
- Remove excess clothing and apply cooling blankets or cold packs to axilla/groin.
- Administer IV isotonic fluids as ordered.
- Monitor for seizure activity and cardiac arrhythmias.
