Chemical Exposure Decontamination
Immediate decontamination is critical to prevent secondary contamination of healthcare staff and facilities.
Decontamination Steps
- Remove all clothing and personal items from the patient.
- Irrigate skin and eyes with water or saline for at least 15-20 minutes.
- Contain runoff to prevent environmental contamination.
- Assess for respiratory distress or chemical burns immediately post-decon.
Nurse Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE (level C or B depending on agent).
- Monitor for signs of secondary exposure in staff.
- Ensure the facility's disaster plan includes a dedicated outdoor decontamination zone.
