Acute Pulmonary Embolism
A sudden blockage in a lung artery, usually caused by a blood clot traveling from the deep veins of the legs.
Assessment
- Sudden onset dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain
- Tachypnea and tachycardia
- Hypoxemia despite oxygen therapy
- Feeling of impending doom
Nursing Interventions
- Elevate head of bed to High-Fowler’s position
- Administer supplemental oxygen
- Maintain IV access for anticoagulant therapy
Stabilization
- Monitor PTT/INR based on prescribed therapy
- Prepare for possible thrombolytic administration
- Monitor for signs of bleeding
