Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder

A condition characterized by sudden, recurrent episodes of intense fear or discomfort accompanied by physical symptoms.

Physical Manifestations

  • Palpitations and tachycardia
  • Shortness of breath or choking sensation
  • Chest pain and diaphoresis
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Dread of impending doom

Nursing Interventions

  • Stay with the patient during the attack to provide reassurance
  • Speak in a calm, low-pitched voice
  • Encourage slow, deep breathing (pursed-lip)
  • Provide a calm environment once the attack subsides

Post-Attack Support

  • Encourage identification of potential triggers
  • Teach relaxation techniques for future prevention
  • Educate on the biological nature of the attack
