A framework detailing eight stages of human development, each characterized by a psychosocial crisis that must be resolved.

Key Stages

  • Trust vs. Mistrust (Infancy): Basis for future relationships.
  • Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt (Toddler): Development of independence.
  • Initiative vs. Guilt (Preschool): Exploration and play-based learning.
  • Industry vs. Inferiority (School Age): Competence in tasks and skills.
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion (Adolescence): Search for self and belonging.

Clinical Relevance

  • Promote independence for toddlers to resolve Autonomy vs. Shame.
  • Support school-age children's autonomy by allowing participation in care.
  • Address identity concerns in teens to improve treatment adherence.
