Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest, significantly impairing daily functioning.
Clinical Manifestations
- Anhedonia or depressed mood lasting at least two weeks
- Significant weight change or appetite disturbance
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation
Nursing Interventions
- Assess for suicide risk immediately and frequently
- Establish a safe environment by removing hazardous items
- Encourage verbalization of feelings
- Monitor nutritional and sleep patterns
- Administer antidepressants as prescribed and monitor for side effects
