Bipolar Disorder

A mood disorder characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, alternating between manic and depressive episodes.
Nursing Interventions (Manic Phase)
- Provide a safe, low-stimulation environment
- Prioritize high-calorie, finger foods that are easy to eat on the go
- Limit group activities that may increase agitation
- Use firm, calm, and neutral communication
Safety Monitoring
- Assess for suicidal ideation, especially during the shift from mania to depression
- Implement suicide precautions as necessary
- Monitor for signs of sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion
