Pathophysiology
Hyperthyroidism (Thyroid Storm)
Hyperthyroidism is a state of hypermetabolism, with Thyroid Storm representing an acute, extreme manifestation of thyrotoxicosis.
Clinical Signs
- Tachycardia and palpitations
- Heat intolerance and diaphoresis
- Weight loss despite increased appetite
- Exophthalmos (Grave’s disease specific)
Management
- Administer antithyroid meds (Methimazole/PTU)
- Administer beta-blockers for cardiac symptoms
- Cooling blankets to manage hyperthermia
- Maintain a calm, quiet environment
