Infection Control and Precautions
Standard and transmission-based precautions are essential to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections.
Standard Precautions
- Perform hand hygiene before and after patient contact.
- Wear gloves when anticipating contact with blood or body fluids.
- Use gown and face protection if splashing or spraying is likely.
- Properly dispose of sharps in puncture-resistant containers.
Transmission-Based Isolation
- Contact: Gown and gloves (e.g., MRSA, C. diff).
- Droplet: Surgical mask within 3 feet (e.g., Influenza, Pertussis).
- Airborne: N95 respirator, negative pressure room (e.g., TB, Measles, Varicella).
