Oxygen Delivery Systems

The use of various devices to deliver supplemental oxygen to improve patient oxygenation status.
Common Delivery Devices
- Nasal Cannula: 1-6 L/min; best for low-flow needs.
- Simple Mask: 6-12 L/min; used for short-term support.
- Venturi Mask: Provides precise FiO2; ideal for COPD patients.
- Non-Rebreather: 10-15 L/min; used for high-concentration needs.
Nursing Precautions
- Ensure oxygen safety (no smoking, no sparks, secure cylinders).
- Check skin integrity behind ears for pressure ulcers.
- Humidify oxygen at flow rates > 4 L/min to prevent mucosal drying.
- Monitor O2 saturation via pulse oximetry.
Patient Teaching
- Explain the need for supplemental O2 to reduce anxiety.
- Encourage deep breathing exercises.
