Screening vs. Diagnostic Testing
Distinguishing between population-level screening and individual clinical diagnosis.
Definitions
- Screening: Testing asymptomatic individuals to identify unrecognized disease.
- Diagnostic: Testing symptomatic individuals to confirm presence of disease.
- Sensitivity: Ability to correctly identify those with the disease (few false negatives).
- Specificity: Ability to correctly identify those without the disease (few false positives).
Nursing Considerations
- Explain the purpose of screening to reduce patient anxiety.
- Ensure follow-up for positive screening results.
- Understand predictive values in low-prevalence populations.
