Veracity and Fidelity
Veracity is the obligation to tell the truth; fidelity is the duty to keep promises and maintain patient trust.
Maintaining Veracity
- Do not withhold information about a diagnosis or prognosis.
- If a mistake occurs, report it honestly and follow facility protocol.
- Provide accurate information regarding side effects of treatments.
- Avoid jargon to ensure truth is communicated clearly.
Upholding Fidelity
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Be present and reliable during critical clinical moments.
- Avoid abandoning the patient during stressful procedures.
- Follow through on commitments made to the patient regarding care.
