Sepsis Recognition
Sepsis is a life-threatening systemic response to infection that can rapidly progress to septic shock and multi-organ failure.
Assessment Findings
- Fever or hypothermia.
- Tachycardia and tachypnea.
- Altered mental status.
- Lactate levels > 2 mmol/L (indicates tissue hypoperfusion).
Immediate Actions
- Obtain blood cultures before administering antibiotics.
- Initiate broad-spectrum IV antibiotics within 1 hour.
- Administer IV fluid resuscitation (30ml/kg isotonic crystalloid).
