Patient Advocacy and Cultural Safety
The RN serves as the primary bridge between the patient's cultural needs and the clinical system.
Cultural Competence
- Use professional interpreters for all informed consent and medical decisions.
- Incorporate patient's cultural beliefs into the plan of care whenever possible.
- Avoid assumptions based on generalized cultural traits; treat the individual patient.
Advocacy Actions
- Support the patient's right to refuse treatment after providing full education on risks.
- Escalate concerns to the provider if a patient's pain or symptoms are being dismissed.
- Ensure the patient's values are represented in end-of-life or advance directive discussions.
