Medication Administration Safety
The new graduate RN must focus on the 'Rights' of medication administration to prevent sentinel events.
The 10 Rights
- Right patient, medication, dose, route, time, documentation, education, assessment, evaluation, and right to refuse.
- Verify two patient identifiers before every single medication administration.
- Perform a 'triple check' at the Pyxis/medication room, after retrieval, and at the bedside.
High-Alert Medications
- Always perform an independent double-check for insulin, heparin, and chemotherapy.
- Know the antidote for high-alert medications before administration.
- Monitor for therapeutic range, not just the dose given.
