Prioritization and Delegation
The transition to RN requires mastery of the five rights of delegation and clinical decision-making based on acuity.
Delegation Principles
- RNs cannot delegate nursing process tasks: Assessment, Planning, Evaluation, Teaching.
- UAPs can perform tasks that are predictable, stable, and routine.
- LPNs can perform stable tasks with predictable outcomes but cannot initiate IV blood or complex assessments.
Prioritization Frameworks
- Use ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) for immediate life-threats.
- Use Maslow's Hierarchy for non-emergency triage.
- Apply the Nursing Process: Assess before taking action unless the situation is an emergency.
