Informed Consent
The nurse's role in informed consent is to act as a witness and ensure the patient has been fully informed.
Nursing Responsibilities
- Verify the provider provided the explanation
- Confirm the patient is alert and oriented
- Ensure the patient is not under chemical influence
- Witness the signature on the form
- Notify the provider if the patient has questions
Exclusions
- Emergencies when life-saving care is needed
- Patients deemed incompetent by legal process
- Minors in specific emancipated circumstances
